Modified Butimen

Developed in Europe in the early 1960s, modified bitumen (MB) sheet membranes have been used in the USA since 1970s. Modified bitumen roofing systems consist of asphalt with some modifiers added for durability. Although 2-ply systems are the most common, but 1-ply and 3-ply systems are also available.

Types of MB roofing membranes:

• SBS polymer-modified bitumen membranes – These enhance the membrane flexibility and enable it to have greater expansion and contraction abilities. SBS polymer-modified bitumen membranes are more popular in roofs as it has greater flexibility due to the synthetic rubber additive.
• APP polymer-modified bitumen membranes – These enhance the aging ability of the roof.

Modified bitumen (MB) roofing is installed using the torch method.
